By The Sea Festival has been cancelled

They’ll be back next year though…

By The Sea festival has been cancelled this summer – but promised to be back “bigger and better than ever” next year.

Having started in 2015, the festival at Dreamland in Margate had become a highlight of the summer circuit. By The Sea saw performances from The Libertines, Metronomy and Everything Everything, while the likes of Jarvis Cocker, Foals, Bat For Lashes, Wolf Alice, Wild Beasts and many more.

However, new restrictions on how many people can be within one of the festival’s main venues has forced them to pull this year’s event.

“Due to a recent decrease in the saleable indoor capacity of The Hall By The Sea at Dreamland, we are no longer able to continue to host an indoor By The Sea festival event in the same form as previous years,” said the festival in a statement. “This will not affect the other scheduled/announced Dreamland events, but unfortunately does for the more bespoke set-up to make By The Sea what it is.

Organisers say that full refunds will be available for those who purchased early bird tickets, and that the move was “beyond their control and a very recent development”. They did however, vow to return in 2019 – but at a different time of year.

Know your rights: what to do if the festival you’re attending is cancelled

“Looking forward, the good news is that we will be moving the next edition of the festival to earlier in the year – specifically in the summer of 2019 – and have some exciting ideas in the works…more to be revealed in due course,” they continued. “Following three sell-out years, we are truly looking forward to growing By The Sea into its next phase, utilising this now-fallow year to get ahead of the game on each and every detail.

“We will be revealing all the details about that soon.”
