Watch Christine and The Queens take ‘Girlfriend’ to Fallon

Touché, touché

Christine and The Queens appeared as a guest on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last night, making her US television debut. She was joined by The Roots and her recent collaborator Dâm-Funk for the performance.

The all-singing, all-dancing French pop star made her comeback last month with ‘Girlfriend’. The track features Dâm-Funk as a guest, and its release was followed by a dance-filled video inspired by 1930s builders. Performing on the late night show, Christine and The Queens was joined by the same dance troupe that appears in her music video, along with Dâm-Funk and The Roots providing the backing band.

“Meeting Dâm-Funk was one of the highlights of last year,” Christine and The Queens told Matt Wilkinson on Beats 1 last month. “He came in the studio, typical Dâm-Funk, with black sunglasses and incredible poise and he was like, ‘So Christine, what do you need me to do?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know just be yourself!’ And he did one take of the keytar solo and then he did some ad-libs and I was like, ‘I can’t believe I did that”.

Prior to releasing ‘Girlfriend’, Christine and The Queens teased a “sweatier” new direction, telling NME to expect a “sweaty and tougher” second album.

Speaking about her new persona Chris (the French artist has crossed out most of her moniker on tour posters) she said “I’m back and I’m evolving. It’s about making the character evolve in a way that feels to me that it fits more well with where I’m at now. And Chris feels more like a nickname, like something that is more confident and exposed and I do feel like the new sounds are going to be very much about that.”
