“Pay some respect to the ultimate legend”.
Sam Smith has received a fierce backlash online, after he admitted that he isn’t a fan of Michael Jackson.
Despite being widely acknowledged as perhaps the single most influential figure in the history of pop music, it seems that the late King of Pop hasn’t found a fan in the soul star.
The brave admission came as he holidayed with Adam Lambert, who recorded a video of the pair relaxing on a boat.
As the camera pans round to Smith, he admits: “I don’t like Michael Jackson, but this is a good song.”
The clip ends right after a few friends are heard to reply “wow’, admitting their surprise at the admission.
But along with their surprise, Smith has attracted a fair bit of anger online too.
Posting on Twitter, one fan wrote: “Yes Sam Smith can have his opinion, of course. But you can’t just say ‘I don’t like Michael Jackson’, you have to say ‘I’m very sorry but Michael Jackson’s songs aren’t my fave.’
“That’s it. Pay some respect to the ultimate LEGEND and forever #1 of billions.”
Another raged: “Sam Smith doesn’t like Michael Jackson. The same Sam Smith whose Bond theme sounded like Earth Song?”
However, there was also some defence for Smith too – with one fan defending his right to dislike MJ.
“Okay but in all seriousness, idk why people would drag Sam Smith for not liking Michael Jackson. not everyone has to like every celebrity. it’s so dumb to start drama over. we are all human. just don’t bring attention to it”, one reasoned.
Last year, Smith released his second record ‘The Thrill of It All’.
Describing the record to NME, he admitted that it was “dangerous”.
“I don’t want it to be an easy listen”, he claimed.
