Donat played Agent Fox Mulder’s father on the show
It’s been confirmed that X-Files actor Peter Donat passed away at his home in Point Reyes, California on Monday (September 10).
Donat was 90 years old and while his cause of death is yet to be officially confirmed, it’s believed that he died from complications with diabetes.
Donat was known for portraying Agent Fox Mulder’s father on the show. He also appeared on the likes of Murder, She Wrote,
The F.B.I., Hawaii Five-O and Hill Street Blues.
Donat was also a prominent stage actor, portraying characters such as Cyrano de Bergerac, Prospero, Shylock, King Lear and Hadrian VII over the years.
He went on to appear in two Francis Ford Coppola movies, appearing as a lawyer in The Godfather Part II after initially being considered for the role of Tom Hagen in The Godather. He also starred as Otto Kerner in Coppola’s 1980 movie Tucker: The Man and His Dream.
Writing a touching tribute on Twitter, actor David Duchovny said:
“Peter had an easy gravitas as a performer and seemed to come from that generation that took the art seriously but not too seriously. It was an honor to know him and work with him.” You can see that tweet below.
The Wire‘s Wendell Pierce also paid tribute to Donat, writing: “For 3 seasons I worked at the American Concervatory Theater. I watched the masterful Peter Donat and had the singular honor to perform with him in L’Histoire du Soldat. A man of great character and grace. RIP.”
The X-Files returned to screens earlier this year for its 11th season. Last December, Anderson confirmed that season 11 would be her last following a 25-year stint as Scully. “I’ve said from the beginning that this is it for me,” she told TV Insider. “I was a bit surprised by people’s [shocked] reaction to my announcement because my understanding was that this was a single season.”
