Smashing Pumpkins Tap Mark McGrath for ‘Silvery Sometimes’ Video – Rolling Stone

The Smashing Pumpkins recruited Sugar Ray frontman Mark McGrath – a bizarre fixture on the band’s recent tour with his pre-filmed introductions – for their playfully macabre “Silvery Sometimes (Ghosts)” video. The singer plays radio DJ Jackie Cherry, who hosts the band for a Halloween haunted house promotion.

“It’s all for charity – and some good-old spooky fun,” McGrath says, introducing the Smashing Pumpkins – Billy Corgan, James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlin and Jeff Schroeder – to a small group of rabid fans wearing “ZERO” T-shirts. The band’s aim, he says, is to survive a “murderous night” in the house, with thousands of charitable dollars on the line.

The quartet retire to their gothic living quarters, where their actions – eating cookies, walking down stairs lined with Jack-o’-lanters – are live-streamed to fans. Creepiness ensues via ventriloquist dolls, hallucinatory devil skulls and demonic creatures, and the video ends with a simultaneously ominous and hilarious snippet of McGrath rapping over dark electronica.

“Silvery Sometimes (Ghosts)” is the second preview from the Smashing Pumpkins’ upcoming 10th LP, Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun., their first in 18 years to feature the reunited trio of original members Corgan, Iha and Chamberlin. The Rick Rubin-produced album, out November 16th, also includes lead single “Solara.”

The band recently announced a brief 30th anniversary tour that kicks off Tuesday, October 16th in London, England.
