Axl Rose says Queen and Freddie Mercury are “the greatest of all time”

“They embraced so many different styles”

Axl Rose has said Queen and Freddie Mercury were the “greatest” band and frontman “of all time” in a rare interview.

Ahead of playing a Guns N’ Roses show in Abu Dhabi that was cut short due to Rose being ill, the singer made the comments to Atlas, a local media outlet.

On being asked about his favourite frontman of all time, Rose said: “For me, it’s easy – Queen is the greatest band and Freddie [Mercury] is the greatest frontman of all time.”

He added: “The band are the greatest because they embraced so many different styles.”

In the same interview, Rose also spoke about his favourite city to play. “New York will always be special for me. When we were in LA we were playing the Hollywood club scene, but New York is where we wanted to be. We have done so many performances there over the years – the city holds a lot of memories.”

Guns N’ Roses’ most recent album was ‘Chinese Democracy’ in 2008, which didn’t feature Slash or Duff McKagan. Their last album with the band’s classic line-up was ‘Use Your Illusion I & II’ in 1992, with Slash and McKagan departing during the making of covers album ‘The Spaghetti Incident?’ the following year.

Slash said back in September that the band is working on a new album, saying that Rose had “a ton” of songs ready, while the guitarist had also recently been inspired to start writing for Guns N’ Roses again.

Guns N’Roses are due to end their 2018 tour with their first ever concert in Hawaii on December 8.
