Another member of New Order is publishing their autobiography

Drummer Stephen Morris is the third member of the band to pen his memoirs

New Order drummer Stephen Morris is publishing his autobiography in May 2019, becoming the third member of the Manchester veterans to pen his memoirs.

Record Play Pause will be published by Constable on May 9, and follows books by singer Bernard Sumner and former bassist Peter Hook.

A press release for the book states: “Stephen’s book won’t be that typical music autobiography, which tends to be high on mischief and low on the music. Part memoir, part aural history, it will be a hybrid memoir in Stephen’s wry and witty voice.

“Stephen will weave a dual narrative of growing up in the North West during the 1970s with how the music actually works. It will also explore what it is to be part of a mythologised band and the idea of what you do becoming who you are.” The book is available to pre-order here.

Morris’ book means that, of the founding members of New Order, only Morris’ wife – keyboardist Gillian Gilbert – has yet to write her autobiography. Sumner’s book Chapter And Verse was published in 2014, while Hook’s book Substance followed in 2016. Hook called Chapter And Verse  “cruel and spiteful” shortly after its publication.

Since Hook left New Order in 2007, the band have released one album, ‘Music Complete’, in 2015 to favourable reviews, while Hook has continued to tour solo, revisiting New Order and Joy Division’s catalogue.

New Order played a one-off concert at Alexandra Palace on November 9, and were the subject of a Sky Arts documentary, Decades, in September. Morris and Gilbert presented a one-off BBC Four documentary about synthpop, Synth And Beyond, in October.

Since ‘Music Complete’, there has been no concrete news about a new album, but there are rumours that a reissue campaign of the band’s music may begin in 2019 – though this has yet to be confirmed.
