Kris Jenner, Troye Sivan and Jennifer Coolidge cameo in the new music video that’s bursting with movie references
Ariana Grande has released the music video for her record-smashing song, ‘Thank U, Next’.
The video references classic ’00s films including Mean Girls, and features a cameo from one of the movie’s original stars, Jonathan Bennett – aka Mean Girls’ Aaron Samuels. Kris Jenner, Troye Sivan, and Colleen Ballinger also join in on the Mean Girls re-enactments.
The video begins with high-school students spreading their own “gossip” stories about Grande. Sivan appears at the beginning, saying: “I heard she’s a lesbian who’s now dating a chick called Aubrey. It’s fucking sick.”
Later on, Grande flits between reenacting different scenes from other memorable ’00s movies including Bring It On and Legally Blonde. Part way into the video, a comedy cut scene between Ari and actress Jennifer Coolidge – perhaps best known for her role as Stifler’s mom in the American Pie movie franchise – interrupts the music inside a salon that nods to Hairspray.
With the release of the video comes the news that Grande is the most streamed artist worldwide on Spotify. It was announced today (November 30) that Grande has surpassed Selena Gomez’ previous record, clinching the title with a massive 46.9 million monthly listeners.
Earlier this month, ‘Thank U, Next’ also became the fastest song in Spotify history to surpass 100 million streams.
Elsewhere, Grande has shared an emotional letter that addresses the terrorist attack which claimed 22 lives following her concert at the Manchester Arena in May 2017. It’s featured in her docu-series Ariana Grande: Dangerous Woman Diaries.
