Instagram is now letting you only broadcast your story to your close friends

‘Close Friends’ lists are here

Instagram has launched a new feature which enables users to hide their story from everyone who follows them aside from a pre-selected list of ‘close friends’.

Users can select which followers they’d like to see their story, excluding everyone else, meaning that the likes of the now-legendary Azealia Banks/Grimes/Elon Musk saga might soon be a thing of the past.

The update is seen by some as a response to the growing trend of ‘Finstas’ – secondary accounts set up purely for a smaller network of close friends. Instagram bosses were reportedly concerned they were leading to people using the service less as a result.

No one will be notified as to whether they’ve been added or removed to a ‘close friends’ list, but instead of the usual pink circle around profiles with a story, the circle will be green indicating you’re a close friend and can see the content.

The Verge reported in 2017 that the social media platform was trialling a ‘favourites’ system, which allowed users to prioritise certain followers.

They quoted product lead at Instagram Robby Stein as saying: “People are trying to hack Instagram to create smaller audiences, and we’re trying to recognize that.”

The feature is available to all users with the newest updated version of the Instagram mobile app.
