The franchise is being revived less than two years after ‘The Final Chapter’ came out
A fresh movie reboot of the Resident Evil franchise is in the works.
The high-grossing horror film series – which is based on the popular video game franchise of the same name – appeared to come to an end in 2017 with the sixth Resident Evil film, The Final Chapter.
However, the series is being revived and a new movie is now in the works. Variety reports that 47 Meters Down director Johannes Roberts will write and direct the next instalment of Resident Evil, which is being produced by Constantin Film.
The latest Resident Evil reboot is due to start shooting in 2019, with a brand new cast set to be assembled. A total of six films are reportedly being planned for this latest reboot.
Mortal Kombat‘s Greg Russo had previously penned a script for the upcoming film – but last month he revealed he’d left the project, and was now unsure as to whether his screenplay would actually be used.
“I worked on the reboot for about a year and then [producer] James Wan came in, my involvement on that project has kind of concluded, so I’m not sure what they’ll really do with it,” he disclosed. “I submitted my draft to the producers and they were happy with it and ultimately they’ll do what they will with the property but I’m currently not involved with that film.”
