Details emerge of a new Chris Morris film, ‘This Day Shall Come’

The man behind Four Lions is back…

A new film written and directed by British satirist Chris Morris is to be released his year.

The Day Shall Come, from the man behind cult ’90s news parody series Brass Eye and 2010’s Four Lions, will premiere at this year’s SXSW festival.

The movie, which stars Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect), Danielle Brooks (Orange Is The New Black), Denis O’Hare (True Blood) and newcomer Marchánt Davis, is set in Miami in 2013 and tells the story of cash-strapped preacher Moses who is offered money to save his family from eviction.

Moses is unaware that his sponsor works for the FBI who aims to turn him into a criminal “by fuelling his madcap revolutionary dreams”.

As iNews reports, there are parallels to Malcolm X in the film. Moses’ full name is Moses Al Bey Al Shabazz. Shabazz was the surname taken by Malcolm X and his descendants after he rejected the Nation of Islam.

The website adds that Malcolm Latif Shabazz, Malcolm X’s grandson, was a spokesperson for Islamic and African-American causes in Miami when he was killed in 2013 under mysterious circumstances linked to the FBI.

Details of the film first emerged in November 2017, when it was reported that Morris was shooting a new project with Kendrick in the Caribbean.

At the time, Kendrick posted a set photo on Instagram which saw her wielding a semi-automatic rifle while decked out in a bulletproof vest. She also posted a video that saw her donning an FBI cap.

The Film4-backed movie therefore looks to be Morris’ return to satirising terrorism (see Four Lions) with the aforementioned Davis starring as Moses, Kendrick playing FBI operative Kendra Glack, and Brooks starring as Venus, the mother of Moses’ seven-year old daughter, Rosa.

A cinema release date has not been confirmed for the film despite it reportedly being far into the post-production stage, however, it will premiere at this year’s SXSW festival in March.
